Tip for Maintaining Night Vision

This is a very handy tip I picked up on one of the field exercise in the Army.

It was actually practiced by one of the officers there. The thing is that when you are outside and it is night your eyes slowly adapts to the darkness. After a while you get night vision the makes it possible to see to some extent in the darkness.

It is very important to be able to see the enemy before he sees you.

But the thing is, when you go inside the officers tent to get your orders, it is often lit up very well in there. Also it could be that you have to go inside a building for some reason, and in there it could be bright lighting.

It only takes a couple of seconds for the light to destroy the night vision of the eyes. After that it will take perhaps 30 minutes out in the darkness before your eyes adjusts back to the darkness.

Then if you suddenly comes under fire you are standing there almost blind in the darkness.

So here is the trick: When you go inside a bright officers tent or a building that has lighting, you always keep one eye closed. It should perhaps be the right eye, since that is what you will aim with.

So when you are where it is lit - Always keep one eye shut! Then when you go outside you have one eye that still has maintained its night adjustment and you are able to see with one eye in the darkness.

My tip is that you should also practice this technique even if it is not a war right now and that you live in a city with civilized people.
